External Counter Pulsation Therapy
External counter pulsation therapy (ECP) is a non-invasive outpatient therapy for angina that is designed to help enhance the blood flow process.
The ECP therapy session involves the patient laying on a comfortable bed with pneumatic cuffs placed around the calves, thighs and buttocks. An oxygen pump is attached to the pneumatic cuffs which inflate along with the patient’s heartbeat. This therapy has been shown to help improve circulation while pumping blood and oxygen to the heart.
The course of treatment typically requires 35 hour-long treatments for about five to seven days per week. Although, ECP is not designed to replace bypass surgery or angioplasties, it is a great, non-invasive treatment for common blood circulation issues.
